Your calling & mentorship

Did you hear that call?  Maybe it wasn't life changing but rather a spark that has you inspired.  Or maybe it was a call to greatness!  Don't be afraid of those calls to explore someting new.  Reach out and explore those light bulbs that have you inspired right now.

Right now, I am following a bit of inspiration to be a mentor.  I feel extremely blessed in my life and do not want for much.  I get great personal satisfaction in helping others.  I decided to join a professional mentoring program at my work and would like the opportunity to share these insights with a larger community!

I feel everyon has a calling in life, whether it be a calling to try something new for dinner or try a new profession.  But something we are passionate about!  Callings can be a truly transformative experience that gives a sense of purpose and direction in life.  Be open to those new experiences and be willing to take risks.  Follow your heart and find your calling (even if its a new meal tonight)!

I encourage you to take the next step, and then also reach back to help folks who are struggling also.  Be the role model.  Be the change you want to see in the world :)

The first thing I have learned when mentoring others is to expect the unexpected and for me to have to grow along with my mentee.  For instance, my mentee might say they're inspired by a profession that I have no knowledge of!  My job as a mentor is to listen and ask the probing questions that allow the mentee to find their own path and inspire those next steps.

As a mentor, I do my best to show support regardless of what stage or path the mentee is on.  If the mentee feels stuck or uninspired, I am supportive of this as a valid stage.  I support emotions as they are, and don't push aside what I want them to feel rather than what they are feeling.

As I'm not the expert in all professions (hard to believe, right?), I try to challenge my mentees to see what inspires them to reach their full "right now" potential.  I want those mentees to see they are capable of more than they think.  They should set those high goals and not get lost in the daily mire.

It takes time to achieve great things and people should not be expected to change overnight.  Never do I expect a mentee to take what can be intimidating steps forward, especially when it involves financial risk.  I too am hesitant to change and need a great deal of time and support before I make a move.

Finally, I am so excited to celebrate successes with my mentees.  Whether small or large, a step taken or a choice to wait for the next one.  Each challenge is a learning opportunity and I'm so excited to help folks stay motivated and keep trying.

Tips:

  • Listen to your heart.  What inspires you?  What do you love doing?  What makes you feel whole?
  • Be open to new experiences.  Don't be afraid to try new things and don't expect perfection right away.  You might be surprised at what you find if you keep trying!
  • Take the next step.  Step outside your comfort zone.  Go find someone to bounce these ideas off of!
